WORKING AT EAST OF EDEN FLOWER FARM

Before we tell you about our beautiful, peaceful, and idyllic farm, it’s important to say this clearly: farming—even flower farming—is physically demanding work.

This doesn’t just mean being able to lift 50 pounds. It means full days of physical labor, often with some level of discomfort. Heat, cold, rain, bugs, dirt, and sore muscles are just as much a part of the job as dahlias, lilies, and tulips.

That said, for the right person, this work is deeply rewarding.

More important than any specific work background, we look for team members who have the ability and desire to:

  • Work with a deliberate pace: We expect that it will take time to learn each task well. A willingness to learn, improve, and be challenged is essential. Quality matters, and efficiency comes with experience.

  • Bring a positive, grounded attitude: A good attitude is a prerequisite. This means receiving feedback well, communicating respectfully, and practicing patience. Open, direct, and thoughtful communication is central to how we work together.

  • Be reliable: Show up on time and ready to work. Farming depends on consistency. While we understand that life happens, our expectation is that missed days are rare and communication is clear.

Additionally, our ideal team member demonstrates:

  • A desire to learn about flowers and farming: We love what we do, and we value team members who come curious, observant, and invested in the work—interested not just in completing tasks, but in understanding the why behind them.

  • A strong work ethic: Farming is both rewarding and demanding. There will be beautiful, energizing days and others that are repetitive, tiring, or challenging. Team members should be comfortable working in standing or kneeling positions for extended periods of time.

  • A willingness to work in all weather: We plan our days to be as comfortable as possible, but the work continues in all conditions—hot and sunny, cold and rainy, and everything in between. Appropriate clothing and preparedness are essential.

  • A desire to be challenged and grow: We see the farm as a place of both personal and professional growth. Our role as managers is to set clear expectations and to support each team member in building skills and confidence over the course of the season.

  • The ability to work both collaboratively and independently: Some tasks are best done as a team, others alone. Team members should be able to stay motivated, focused, and efficient in both settings.

  • Focus and attention to detail: There is often space for conversation and camaraderie in the workday, which we value. At the same time, the task at hand always comes first. Care, attention, and mindfulness in the work are essential.

  • All team members must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

The season builds gradually in the spring and transitions into a fast-paced, high-volume harvest period as summer approaches. Flexibility, stamina, and a steady pace become especially important during this time.

What you can expect from us

Small-scale agriculture is a challenging industry that requires a great deal from the people who choose it. We hold high expectations—but we also hold ourselves to a high standard.

We are committed to creating a workplace grounded in respect.

We think about this in two ways:

Kindness
We strive to be patient, thoughtful, and fair. This includes being open to feedback and creating a work environment where people feel supported.

Directness
We believe that clear, honest communication is a form of respect. We are invested in each team member’s growth, which means offering feedback, providing guidance, and creating opportunities to take on new responsibilities.

We are not perfect, and we don’t expect anyone else to be. Just as a new team member comes to work each day with the intention of improving their skills, we approach each season with the same mindset—always learning, always refining, and always looking for ways to do better.
